Nigerian Army claims to have killed 100 Boko haram fighters;

NIGERIAN military authorities are claiming another significant victory in the battle against Boko Haram insurgents with reports that over 100 terrorists were killed in a battle that in them recapturing the town of Abadam in Borno State.

Earlier this month, Boko Haram insurgents captured Abadam, killing about 40 soldiers in the attack but over the weekend, a multinational force took it back. It is thought that the force was made up of Nigerian, Nigerien, Chadian and Cameroonian soldiers involved in a joint-border protection programme.

According to military source in Maiduguri, up to 100 members of the Jihadist group were gunned down in a battle that raged from Friday night to Saturday morning. Multinational forces had launched a multi-pronged attack on Boko Haram's positions and after the epic battle, about two dozen corpses littered the narrow untarred roads in Abadam.

One military source said: “The air attacked succeeded in shelling most of Boko Haram's occupied spots, forcing them to scamper into the bushes where they ran into the ambush of the ground troops, who showed no mercy with their rifles."

Local resident Aliyu Goni, who was returning to Abadam after a week of exile in Niger Republic, added: “I saw many dead bodies as we were returning back to Abadam after the soldiers encouraged us to go back home. There were many corpses of the Boko Haram members in Arge ward where the leader of the Boko Haram that led the insurgents into Abadam was seen issuing order."

This latest fighting proceeded despite talk of a ceasefire between Boko Haram and the Nigerian government. Last week, the Nigerian government said it had negotiated a ceasefire with the terrorist group that would result in the release of the Chibok girls.
